Last night featured some powered-up racing at StFYC’s Friday night series. There were some pretty serious gusts making their way down the course. One created some problems for a couple of the sailors below. As the gust hit you could see their boards being lifted right off the water as they struggled to hang on. No crashes here though. Everyone was able to keep things under control and make it through the race.

Saturday, June 13th, 2009San Francisco photo safari. Who’s game?
Thursday, June 11th, 2009After request from several friends, I’m starting to organize a photo walk in San Francisco. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Here’s the idea…
Everyone brings their camera gear and we go on a group hike (safari) in a neighborhood of San Francisco. The walk will take us past several San Francisco vistas and along the way we’ll get to experience the atmosphere of the particular neighborhood. By walking, we’ll get to see things that we would normally just cruise right by.
Everyone should have a general understanding of how their camera and equipment operates but I will provide some coaching and tips as we go. We can also trade gear within the group so people can try new lenses, etc.
At the end of the safari, we’ll take a look at everyones’ photos and do a group critique.
A couple other variations I’m considering:
- I can organize lens rentals so everyone has the same lens to work with. This way we could really see the differences in the styles of the various photographers.
- We could do a musical chairs type arrangement with a variety of lens types with each person getting their chance to try each one. At one location you might “have” to shoot with the telephoto while someone else is using a wide angle. Then at the next location everyone would switch.
Please let me know if this sounds like something you would be interested in. Also, suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Great Saturday afternoon windsurfing at Crissy Field
Monday, April 27th, 2009San Francisco Climb California 2009 hosted by the American Lung Association
Saturday, March 28th, 2009The American Lung Association hosted a climb up the 52 flights of stairs at the 555 California building in downtown San Francisco today. Tons of corporate teams, firemen, sheriffs deputies, and other supporters participated. Waves of runners started every 15 minutes with individual runners spaced about 10 seconds apart. Once at the top, they were greeted by an amazing view, live music and refreshments. Check out the 1500 photos of the event at fotojack.com.
Amgen Tour of California Bike Race
Monday, February 16th, 2009Today’s stage of the Amgen Tour of California started at 8:30am in Sausalito in a torrential downpour. But since this marked the first time a pro cycling event would ride across the Golden Gate Bridge, I didn’t want to miss it. I had my spot staked out at one of the abandoned bunkers overlooking the bridge. By 8:45, all car traffic across the bridge had been cleared off the bridge and stopped in both directions. After a parade of motorcyle police and other support vehicles, the peloton made its way across and into the Presidio. The race then continued down the coast to Santa Cruz.
First windsurfing photos of the 2009 season
Thursday, February 12th, 2009It was a little chilly, not all that windy, and there were only a few sailors out, but for me it marked the start of the 2009 windsurfing season (at least from a photography perspective). Here’s a shot of David Wells cruising past Alcatraz on his formula gear.
There aren’t ever many pictures of me, but here’s one of me testing out the 600mm Nikon lens at Crissy Field.

Thursday, February 5th, 2009Wedding at Italian Athletic Club
Sunday, December 14th, 2008Yesterday, I shot photos at a wedding at the Italian Athletic Club in San Francisco’s North Beach district. The setup was a little challenging because the entire event was inside and after dark. I set up a mini photo studio in the gym of the club and did some group portrait shots there.
