Full moon sets over Pacific Ocean

A couple mornings ago I woke up a little earlier than normal and noticed that there was a nearly full moon in the sky. Thinking about it a bit more, I thought I might be able to catch it setting over the ocean just about the same time the sun was coming up. Well, I had the right idea but was off with the timing just a bit. The sun came up at 7:15am but the moon didn’t set until 8:15am. By that time the moon was barely visible. I’ll have to check out the sun and moon times more closely and give it another shot. Here’s what I was able to salvage out of the excursion.

Surfing at Lands End

While the moon set turned out to be less than expected, there was a group of surfers that more than made up for it. They were getting in an early morning session and were surfing right where the sunrise light was shining over the hilltop - their own spotlight.

Blue Angels Fleet Week Airshow

The Blue Angels were in town for the annual Fleet Week festival to honor our troops. They put on a great show to the delight of the people who had gathered all around the bay to watch. Thanks to Kelly for inviting me up to her rooftop to watch the show - a great vantage point.

Looking to escape the fog and forget about my carbon footprint for a few minutes, I hopped in the car and headed down to Monterey to the Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway for the finals of the AMA Superbike race weekend.

Maltese Falcon Arrives

It seemed like everyone in San Francisco turned out to welcome the Maltese Falcon to the SF. The bay was covered with sailboats. All of a sudden the three tall masts appeared out of the fog just of Baker Beach. She sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge, then past Alcatraz, and then on to Treasure Island. As she passed, all the other sailboats turned to follow. They were no match for the larger boat’s speed and were quickly left fighting against the current.

Maltese Falcon mega yacht visiting San Francisco

At low tide today (2pm) the 300ft mega yacht, Maltese Falcon, will sail under the Golden Gate Bridge. At any other time there might not be enough room for her giant masts to fit under. The sailboat is owned by Tom Perkins of Kleiner Perkins venture capital fame. Head down to Crissy Field to check it out or check back later to see my photos.

Austrailian 18s in San Francisco

The Australian 18 skiff fleet made their annual trip to San Francisco this past week. Here’s a shot of them racing just after the start of the Bridge to Bridge race, a downwind competition with windsurfers and kitesurfers.
